AGBU CONGRATULATES CANADIAN PARLIAMENTARIANS FOR ARMENIAN GENOCIDE
RECOGNITION
On April 21st, the Canadian Parliament overwhelmingly voted to
recognize the Armenian Genocide and designated it a crime against
humanity. AGBU President Berge Setrakian congratulated Member of
Parliament Sarkis Assadourian who co-sponsored the bill along with
fellow Parliamentarians Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral, Jason Kenney and
Alexa McDonough.
The final vote of 153 to 68 was witness by hundreds of Armenian
Canadians from around the country who attended the parliamentary
session and greeted the result with applause. His Grace, Bishop Bagrat
Galstanian, Primate of The Amenian Diocese of Canada, as well as AGBU
Vice President, Dr. Arshavir Gundjian, AGBU Montreal Chairperson,
Mr. Paul Kichian, and other community leaders attended this historic
event.
AGBU Montreal has been among those in the forefront of the efforts for
recognition of the Armenian Genocide in Canada by lobbying individual
MPs and the Canadian Senate. AGBU has played an important role by
joining in the efforts to educate the Canadian public through the
media, public lectures and the sponsorship of various genocide studies
events.
In an interview with the French language Radio-Canada, AGBU Montreal
Vice Chair, Viken L. Attarian, said that this was a victory for
democracy, human rights and that all Canadians should be thankful that
their elected representatives courageously recognized this historical
injustice.
