YENI ZAMAN: U.S.A. OFFICIALLY SUPPORTS NAGORNO KARABAKH

Colin Powell, US Secretary of State, who is spending his last days at
Bush's administration, sent a message to Azeri President Ilham Aliyev
informing that Washington will support Azerbaijan in its striving for
the World Trade Organization. Baku'sYeni Zamannewspaper singled out
the part of theletter saying "The conflicts in separatist regions of
Georgia and Moldova as well as in Nagorno Karabakh remain frozen 15
years after the Cold War".
"It's interesting that the US Secretary of State mentions the full
name of Nagorno Karabakh and does not say that it's part of Azerbaijan
and is a â=80=98 separatist region' as well. Was it an indirect
indication that USA has recognized â=80=98 Nagorno Karabakh Republic'
de facto? By the way, it's not news for us. The Yankee were simply
keeping this fact under wraps",Yeni Zamanwrites.
The paper reminds that few years ago the US Development Agency was
aiding Karabakh. Besides, American budget contains a regulation for
providing financial aid to Nagorno Karabakh's "government". "How
should we understand this if not as a de facto recognition of
`Nagorno Karabakh Republic'?",the paper complains.
