A MAJOR UNDP PROJECT WILL COMBAT HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN ARMENIA
Yerevan, Armenia
Today, the Government of Armenia and the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP) launched the Anti-Trafficking Programme: Capacity
Building Support and Victims Assistance project. Mr. Vartan Oskanian,
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia and Ms. Lise
Grande, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative signed the
project document.
The overall objective of this two-year project is to facilitate the
development of a national framework to tackle the problem of human
trafficking as well as to provide direct assistance to the victims of
trafficking. The project has three major components: building the
institutional capacity of key state agencies; raising public awareness;
and assisting victims of trafficking. As part of the public awareness
campaign, a special `Artists against Trafficking' initiative will be
launched throughout the country.
According to Ms. Grande: `Human trafficking is ruinous. It destroys
Armenian families and wrecks young lives. The United Nations is
committed to helping to better understand human trafficking in Armenia
and to establishing mechanisms for fighting against it. We are confident
that in close collaboration with the Government of Armenia and civil
society this project will succeed.'
The project is supported by the Governments of Norway and the
Netherlands, and it will be implemented by UNDP, the International
Organisation for Migration and UMCOR international NGO.
Country Background: Since its independence Armenia has acceded to
several human rights conventions and developed a number of important
national action plans, such as the UN Convention on Elimination of
Discrimination Against Women, UN Convention on the Rights of the Child,
the Concept Paper and National Action Plan on Counter Trafficking of
Human Beings. The 2004-2010 Armenia National Action Plan on Women has
been submitted to the Government for adoption.
