UZBEK PRESIDENT CALLS ON ARMENIA TO PULL OUT ITS TROOPS FROM KARABAGH
TASHKENT, MARCH 24, ARMENPRESS: Uzbek president Islam Karimov
announced today that Nagorno Karabagh is an integral part of
Azerbaijan and called on Armenia to pull out its troops from the
occupied regions without preconditions. A Baku-based ATV company
reported that after concluding talks with the visiting president of
Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, Karimov said Mikhail Gorbachev did nothing
to stop the conflict and must be held responsible for the bloodshed
between the two nations.
Karimov also said that the package resolution is hopeless and that
the conflict must be resolved step by step to "restore the
territorial integrity of Azerbaijan," and only then to decide the
status of Karabagh.
"I understand that Armenia will not like my proposal, but I am
sure that the first step towards ending the confrontation is the
withdrawal of Armenian troops from the occupied lands. Armenia should
be interested in such an option as it would lift its transport
blockade," he was quoted as saying.
