NOVO-OGAREVO, MAY 14, ARMENPRESS: Vladimir Putin has positively
assessed Russia's economic co-operation with Armenia. "Last year,
trade turnover grew over 34%," the Russian President said opening his
meeting with his Armenian counterpart Robert Kocharian. "This a record
high figure. This is the best evidence of our progress in the correct
direction," Putin said "We have numerous opportunities to work better
and more effectively," he added, expressing confidence that today's
meeting would be a good contribution to Russo-Armenian relations.
The Russian President also noted that his meetings with Robert
Kocharian were regular. "This is our fifth meeting recently to discuss
bilateral ties, co-ordinate efforts on the post-Soviet space and in
international affairs," he said. In his words, this work is not only
hard but also effective. "It is reflected in economic interaction,"
noted Mr. Putin.
Kocharian in turn said, "Our relations are seeing an interesting
economic process - the entry of the Russian major bank, Vneshtorgbank,
into Armenia." Besides, he continued, "an interesting contract on
chemical industry has been signed." "Large chemical industry in Armenia
began working thanks to Russian investors," he added. There are also
interesting examples of investment activity of Russian business in
the construction and other spheres.
"I think a large deal, debt in exchange for property, launched this
process. Earlier, we spoke about military-technological co-operation
only and said we were lagging behind economically. I am absolutely
confident that we have caught up now," said the Armenian leader. In
his opinion, bilateral co-operation is proceeding synchronously on
all positions and is moving towards diversification.
