AZERI LEADER HOPES TO ACHIEVE KARABAKH PEACE ACCORD "BY MEANS OF TALKS"

    Azerbaijani TV Channel One, Baku
    27 May 04

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has addressed a reception at
Gulustan Palace to mark the Day of the Republic, the first channel
of Azerbaijani state television reported on 27 May.

Aliyev spoke about the history of the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic
established on 28 May 1918. Recalling that Azerbaijan regained its
independence in 1991, he touched on the country's achievements since
    that time.

Speaking about the Nagornyy Karabakh conflict, he said: "It is
pleasant that the talks process has resumed after a lengthy break,
and we hope to achieve a peace agreement by means of the talks. Of
course, this agreement must be based on international legal norms,
and Azerbaijan's territorial integrity must be restored. I hope that
we could urgently settle this issue with the involvement and activity
of the OSCE Minsk Group, the organization which is directly involved
in this issue, and other international organizations".
