Glendale, CA (May 26) - Armenia Fund, Inc. (AFI) announced today
that an additional $40,000 was raised for the Ashot Bekor School
in Stepanakert, Nagorno Karabakh Republic (NKR) during its Friday,
May 21st event at the Brandview Collection in Glendale, California.

The event featured over 200 Armenian-American community members,
as well as Gagik Kirakossian, the Consul-General of the Republic of
Armenia, Maria Mehranian, Chairperson of AFI's Board of Directors,
and was hosted by AFI supporter Savey Tufenkian. "Providing quality
educational opportunities is vital to ensuring economic, social
and civil growth. AFI is committed to bringing such nation-building
projects to the forefront and providing avenues for the Diaspora to
assist in the development of Armenia and NKR," said Mehranian.

After years of war, the Bekor School suffered serious damage and is
in need of major renovations to accommodate its 1200 students. In
2003, Inna Ghoukasian, First Lady of NKR, adopted the project and
brought it to the attention of several AFI supporters, including
Tufenkian. "I highly value the Diaspora's vision towards creating
improved educational opportunities for the children of Artsakh (NKR),"
    said Ghoukasian.

The Bekor School not only bears the name of the great Armenian hero,
it also once housed the headquarters of NKR Defense Army, which was
significant in paving the way to freedom for the people. "With his
company's heroic uphill climb to Shushi, Bekor opened a new chapter
of victories in the history of the Armenian people," said Sarkis
Kotanjian, Executive Director of AFI, during a special presentation
honoring Ashot Ghoulian (Bekor), the late commander of NKR Defense
    Army's First Company.

Upon completion, the Bekor School will feature reinforced walls, a
new roof and floors, a central heating system, electric wiring, gas,
water and sewage piping, restrooms, and gymnasium, as well as desks,
chairs and other furnishings essential to creating an effective
educational environment. The total renovation cost for the Bekor
School is estimated at $245,500 of which $120,000 has already been
secured through various AFI fundraising events. "On behalf of AFI and
the Bekor School, I thank Mr. and Mrs. Moorad and Flora Ookhtens for
their generous contribution and support of this event and project,"
    concluded Mehranian.

To participate in the Ashot Bekor School reconstruction project, call
the AFI office at (818) 243-6222 or send a tax-deductible donation
to Armenia Fund, Inc. at 111 N. Jackson Street, Suite 205, Glendale,
