YEREVAN (IRNA) -- President Mohammad Khatami said here Thursday that
followers of all holy religions should try to revive spirituality
throughout the globe to restore peace and security worldwide.
President Khatami made the remarks here, before leaving for Belarus
on Thursday, in a meeting with Garegin II, Catholicos of all
Armenians. "If the world is now exposed to terror, horror, war and
injustice," president Khatami said, "This is because it has forgotten
the God and spirituality."
The meeting was also attended by the representatives of Iranian
Armenians in the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis) who are
accompanying President Khatami in his tour of three regional countries.
Garegin II, in return, expressed satisfaction over Tehran-Yerevan
good relations and Tehran's proper treatment of Iranian Armenians.
-------Iran, Armenia stress consolidation of ties
Iran and Armenia issued a joint communiqué expressing strong readiness
to consolidate friendly ties and fruitful bilateral cooperation in
all fields.
In a meeting between visiting President Khatami and his Armenian
counterpart Robert Kocharian, the sides stressed the need for high
level of Tehran-Yerevan ties which are based on deep-rooted friendship
between the two nations.
The sides called for continuation of regular consultation between
the two countries' state bodies.
The two sides also exchanged views on key regional and international
developments.
They also cited construction of Iran-Armenia gas pipeline, Kajaran
tunnel, hydroelectric power plant on Aras river and a number of other
joint ventures as among fruitful factors for expansion of regional
cooperation.
The sides also exchanged views on campaign against terrorism,
organized crimes and narcotics and hallucinogenic drugs and expressed
determination to adopt measures to counter them. -------Universities
are centers of thoughts
Khatami said universities are the centers of thoughts and champions
of dialogue among civilizations.
"I am happy (the initiative of) dialogue among civilizations has been
welcomed by university professors and students," Khatami said after
delivering a speech at Yerevan State University.
Human beings faced war, grudge, terror and two world wars over the
past century and terrorism also was expanded in the world, he added.
He noted that dialogue among civilizations seeks the rule of justice
in the world and direct human life towards peace.
The UN General Assembly accepted the initiative in 2001 without
opposition, he said, adding reputable centers have been established
in this regard.
"Although the idea of dialogue among civilizations was put forward in
2001, the anti-peace forces showed reactions including the September
11 events which warmongers filled the world with war and occupation
under the pretext of campaign against terrorism.
"But human conscience is against such actions," Khatami said.
