US high-ranking military officer visits Baku
Assa-Irada, Azerbaijan
Sept 10 2004
Defense Minister, Colonel-General Safar Abiyev received a delegation
headed by General Charles Wald, Deputy Commander of the Headquarters
of the US Armed Forces European Command, on Thursday.
General Wald became familiar with the pace of preparations for
the Cooperative Best Effort-04 desert exercises to be held in Baku
shortly within NATO's Partnership for Peace program, Defense Ministry
told AssA-Irada.
Minister Abiyev said that the Azerbaijani people are still concerned
about the unsettlement of the ongoing conflicts in the region,
including the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper Garabagh.
Stressing that the Upper Garabagh conflict negatively affects the
implementation of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and other economic projects,
General Abiyev said: "The problem should be solved soon. Everyone
should know that Azerbaijan won't give in an inch of its territory."
General Wald, in turn, underlined that there are many unsettled
conflicts in the South Caucasus.
"The Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict is one of them. The United States,
Russia and Turkey should take close part in the solution of the
conflict. It is necessary to jointly fight terrorism. The problems of
your country should be settled soon and economic prosperity achieved
in the region."
Touching upon bilateral military relations, General Wald said that
his country will expand cooperation with Azerbaijan in the area
of defense.*
