YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 17, ARMENPRESS: Nagorno Karabagh representation in
Yerevan told Armenpress that some 1,598 visitors traveled to Nagorno
Karabagh in the first eight months of the year, not counting visitors
from former Soviet Union and members of international delegations.
According to Arthur Zakarian, head of the Armenian trade and economic
development ministry department, dealing with tourism, there are clear
indications that tourism industry in Karabagh is on the rise with new
hotels and facilities emerging to serve foreign visitors. However,
he added that Karabagh's "peculiar" political status remains a major
hindrance to tourism boosting, as its achievements are being advertised
abroad by Armenian travel agencies, trying to target largely those
who have already visited Armenia.
According to Karabagh statistical service, some 2,400 tourists from
around 60 countries visited it last year, while this number in the
previous year was 1,700 people from 50 countries.
