Syria evacuates intelligence HQ in Lebanon, chief returns home
ANJAR, Lebanon April 25
Syrian intelligence agents and troops on Monday pulled out of their
Lebanon headquarters in the Bekaa Valley town of Anjar near the
border with Syria, an AFP correspondent said.
The Syrian military intelligence chief for Lebanon, General Rustom
Ghazaleh, was later seen crossing the Masnaa border post being driven
in the direction of the Syrian capital.
His office in Anjar was evacuated and a Lebanese flag was seen
fluttering over the building. Ghazaleh himself was expected to return
to Lebanon on Tuesday for a formal ceremony to complete Syria's
withdrawal.
The only soldiers left in Anjar, an all-Armenian town which Lebanon's
army declared a "military zone" on Monday afternoon, were Lebanese.
