MARSEILLE, France, Feb 11 (Reuters) Second seed David Nalbandian
crashed out of the Marseille Open, losing in the second round to
American Taylor Dent.
The Argentine held his opponent at bay for a set yesterday before
going down 7-6 6-2 to follow top seed and compatriot Guillermo Coria,
beaten in the previous round, out early.
Winning the tie-break 7-3 put Dent on a roll and the American steadily
imposed his attacking game in the second set.
Nalbandian's loss left in-form Swede Joachim Johansson the highest
ranked player in the quarter-finals.
The third seed, winner in Adelaide last month, beat French qualifier
Gilles Simon 7-6 6-3 Another French qualifier, Sebastien De Chaunac,
made it to the last eight without hitting a shot after his opponent,
Briton Greg Rusedski, pulled out injured.
De Chaunac, ranked 275th in the world, shocked top seed Coria in the
previous round and will now play in his first quarter-final at ATP
Tour level.
Tournament doctors said Rusedski, who beat Frenchman Michael Llodra
in the first round, was suffering from a rib injury and thought it
wiser not to play.
Rusedski had replaced injured compatriot Tim Henman in the 510,250-euro
($653,800) tournament.
In the last eight, De Chaunac will meet Croatia's Mario Ancic, who
beat Czech Tomas Berdych 7-5 7-6.
Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic, seeded 8th, and sixth seed Feliciano Lopez
of Spain also made it to Friday's quarter-finals.
