1) Schiff Secures Commitment for Vote on Armenian Genocide Resolution
GLENDALE (News-Press and Leader)--Threatened by the attachment of two
amendments by Rep. Adam Schiff to a state department bill, House International
Relations Committee Chairman Henry Hyde committed to a hearing on an Armenian
Genocide resolution, Schiff said.
Hyde agreed to the hearing if Schiff removed amendments requiring extensive
efforts by the US Government to conduct analysis of diplomatic responses to
the
Armenian, Cambodian and Rwandan genocides and the Holocaust. The amendment
would have also required the US to call for an end to Turkey's ongoing
blockade
with Armenia.
Hyde guaranteed the hearing out of concern that Schiff's amendments would be
approved, Schiff said.
The International Relations Committee has not taken a vote on the Genocide
resolution since October 2000.
Schiff called the guaranteed debate and vote on the resolution a breakthrough
in light of the 90th anniversary of the genocide, during which 1.5 million
Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Empire.
Leaders in Congress and President Bush's administration have been hesitant to
acknowledge the Armenian genocide out of fear of offending US ally Turkey,
Schiff said.
"If that is the standard we will use to recognize the genocide, then that is
not a principled position for us to take," he said. "Turkey will have to come
to grips with its Ottoman past. It is better to do it now, and the US needs to
show some leadership."
2) Oskanian Meets with Rice, other US Officials
WASHINGTON, DC (PanArmenian.net)--In his first visit to the US since the
re-election of President George W. Bush, Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian met
with a number of US government officials, including US Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice, during his two-day visit to the nation's capital
His meeting with Secretary of State Rice focused on the dynamic
development of
bilateral relations between Armenia and the US, as well as the country's
domestic situation and the democratic reform process. Rice commended Armenia's
participation in the war on terror and programs targeted for the
reconstruction
of Iraq.
Informing Rice on the latest developments in the Karabagh conflict
settlement, the two officials exchanged views on the situation in the South
Caucasus and adjacent regions, as well as Armenian-Turkish relations.
The Foreign Minister also met with US National Security Advisor Stephen
Hadley
to discuss prospects of a peaceful settlement to the Karabagh conflict. Hadley
was particularly interested in the legislative reform process in Armenia.
Meeting with members of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues,
Oskanian thanked the Congressmen for consistent assistance rendered to
Armenia.
They reviewed issues likely to be included on the agenda of the
Armenian-American Commission on Economic Cooperation.
Before his departure, he also met with representatives of the Armenian
National Committee of America and the Armenian Assembly of America. Oskanian
leaves for Beijing on June 11.
3) ANC Professional Network Plans Summer Trip to Homeland
LOS ANGELES--The ANC Professional Network (ANC-PN) has organized an exclusive
group trip for young professionals to Armenia this summer, from August 11-22.
With the help of two Armenia veterans, Shant Minas and Mkhitar Moradian,
and in
coordination with ANC-PN counterparts in Yerevan, it promises to be an
outstanding experience for young professionals to visit the Motherland.
With excursions to local historic sites, including Etchmiadzin, Sardarabad,
Khor Virap, Garni, Geghard, and Noravank, as well as a 3-day trip to Artsakh,
which will include 2 nights stay at 4-star Lotus Hotel in Stepanakert, visits
to war-torn city of Aghdam on border, Yerkir USA reconstructed villages, lunch
with LCO volunteers in Shushi and an optional visit to the heroic village of
Karintag, the trip will also offer plenty of free time for shopping, family,
and sightseeing.
Although airline accommodations are not included, ANC-PN has provided a list
of travel agents familiar with the ANC-PN trip itinerary to help arrange a
suitable flight.

4) Armenian Government Takes Measures to Destroy Nature Reserve
By Christian Garbis
YEREVAN--The government of Armenia has already approved measures to have
portions of the Shikahogh forest reserve removed for the construction of a new
highway. An estimated 30 hectares (74 acres) of forest will be cut from the
reserve, located in the Syunik region.
The forest contains some of the most endangered species of animals in the
Caucasus region, such as the Eurasian lynx and mouflon (sheep), which are
listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural
Resources (IUCN) Red Data List. The list documents thousands of species of
animals that are endangered worldwide, with over 70 such species to be
found in
Armenia.
It is estimated that approximately eight percent of Armenia is covered by
forests, down from 12 percent at the beginning of the last century, as
determined by Armenian Forests NGO, an environmental protection organization
based in Yerevan. However, some specialists believe the percentage may be as
low as six percent.
The reserve also contains a virgin oak forest, comprising about 14,000 trees.
The forest represents one of the last untouched wooded areas in Armenia.
`Armenia's forests are threatened--and with them the fragile ecosystem,
water,
crops, air and biodiversity,' said Jeffrey Tufenkian, president of Armenian
Forests NGO.
Environmentalists are concerned that the destruction of the reserve will
further contribute to the ongoing ecological imbalance in effect throughout
the
country. For several years, Lake Sevan has faced increasing threats to further
support marine life as excessive fishing of native species, including the
renowned Ishkhan fish (Armenian trout), has caused the increased, rapid growth
of underwater plants. Deforestation--as a result of a thriving wood export
business, as well as a source of fuel--has caused problems with erosion and
even mudslides in many areas, especially in northern Armenia.
Some representatives of diaspora Armenian organizations have already
expressed
concern. Hrair Hovnanian, board chairman of the Armenian Assembly of America,
wrote a personal letter to President Robert Kocharian urging him to reconsider
the route.
The construction of the highway is endorsed by the Ministry of Transport and
Communication, headed by Andranik Manukyan. The ministry has contracted the
construction firm Transproject to begin work pending a final governmental
decision. Worldwide outcries from various international environmental
protection agencies, including the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), have pressed the
Armenian government to rethink the measure for construction.

5) Black Maria Gallery Presents New Exhibition: `Six Degrees of Separation
(from Warhol)'
LOS ANGELES--Following the success of its inaugural exhibition in May, Black
Maria Gallery announced a new show titled `Six Degrees of Separation (from
Warhol),' which opened on June 4.
`After months of preparation, we were delighted with the response of the Los
Angeles art community to Black Maria's opening exhibition,' said gallery
proprietor Zara Zeituntsian. `I think the works we exhibited have found
resonance among artists and collectors alike.'
According to co-curator Sam Saghatelian, the new exhibit, `Six Degrees of
Separation (from Warhol),' will build on the gallery's vision to present
non-mainstream and non-traditional art by paying tribute to a spirit of
kinship
between generations of artists who are linked together through either personal
or stylistic bonds.
`The inspiration for the upcoming exhibition came from art journalist and
collector Joan Agajanian Quinn,' explained co-curator Sophia Gasparian. `By
introducing me to Zara and Sam, Joan had an instrumental role in the
shaping of
Black Maria Gallery. The fact that she has fostered many such synergies,
including her friendship with Andy Warhol, gave us the `six degrees of
separation' idea, that we're all interconnected in significant ways, beyond
the
personal. Another inspiration was Billy Shire, owner of La Luz de Jesus
Gallery, whose support of what was termed `low brow' art in the 80s spawned a
whole movement.'
The `Six Degrees of Separation (from Warhol)'exhibition will feature new and
recent works, including video art and music, by 12 artists. They are: Srboohie
Abajian, Mari Araki, Gregory Beylerian, Dahlia Elsayed Andrew Demirjian,
Jennifer Quinn and Cliff Dealist, Sophia Gasparian, Frieda Gossett, Pamela
Henderson, Sam Saghatelian, and Silvina Der-Merguerditchian.
The exhibition's nod to Warhol, whose fame owed much to his portraiture of
celebrities, will also come in the form of his portrait painting of Joan
Quinn,
which will be on exhibit during the gala night reception.
`Six Degrees of Separation (from Warhol)' runs through until July 4.

communities and help develop community pride. It has expanded to include the
San Gabriel Valley, with coverage from Ontario and Monrovia to the westerly
portion of the San Fernando Valley.
John Krikorian said, "Capitalism benefits all of us. Little did we realize
fifteen years ago when we launched Business Life in May that it coincided with
Small Business Month, offering us the opportunity to celebrate.'
Business Life has received the US Small Business Administration media award
for `Small Business Advocate' and the Soroptimist International recognition
for
`Improving the Status of Women' in a 20 country region, along with many other
recognition
certificates.
`My parents came here in the mid-20's as
orphans and survivors of the Armenian Genocide,' stated Gregory Krikorian.
`They sowed the seeds of service to their adopted community and country. My
mother volunteered for the YWCA in Connecticut, and my dad served in the Army
National Guard, New Britain Auxiliary Police and became an Air Warden during
the World War II Years,' he noted. `This commitment to community giving and
volunteer runs through all of my family.' Krikorian, co-founder and Vice
President Marketing of Business Life Magazine, was recently overwhelming
elected to a second term on the Glendale Unified School Board and is involved
in many community and civic organizations.
The celebration's keynote speaker was Hector V. Barreto, US Small Business
Administration (SBA) Administrator, past resident of Glendale, and a former
small business owner. Celebrating the magazine's contribution to the region,
Barreto noted, `We have a very entrepreneurial community. Business in the
region is growing. Business Life offers a lot of valuable information for
those
in the region.'
Certificates of commendations for the Anniversary were received from Governor
Arnold Schwarznegger, who noted, `Your coverage (Business Life) has played an
important role in enhancing the region's business climate. California is a
golden land of opportunity where all people can realize their dreams through
ingenuity and perseverance. This milestone reflects the entrepreneurship that
is a trademark of our great state.'
Michael Antonovich, Supervisor, Fifth District, County of Los Angeles said in
his letter to Krikorian, `Your leadership and your dedication to the
magazine's
examination of our business life in the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys,
Pasadena, Glendale and Burbank has had a positive impact on our business
climate far beyond those borders.'
Guests included leaders of the cities of Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank and the
Los Angeles Community Development office, San Fernando and San Gabriel Valley
Chambers of Commerce, the San Gabriel Economic Partnership, Economic Alliance
of the San Fernando Valley, the Various Workforce Investment Boards, the Small
Business Development Centers, along with multicultural business resources such
