"Worse than in Europe, better than in the CIS", Deputy Minister of
Health Hayk Darbinyan stated when commenting on children's and maternal
mortality in Armenia. In his words, in case investments are made the
conditions will improve, since there are problems with training of
the medical staff and equipping the laboratories in the regions.
14 cases of maternal mortality were fixed in Armenia in 2004. This
year 3 women died when delivering a baby. According to head of the
department of the health of mother and child of the RA Health Ministry
Karine Saribekyan, mortality is caused by bleeding, infectious
diseases, post-natal complications, abortion. In Armenia pregnant
women sometimes die of tuberculosis or cancer. Sometimes doctors are
to blame.
According to the data provided WHO, annually over half million women
die in delivery.
To note, WHO regional representation jointly with the Minister of
Health initiated a seminar on the topic to be held June 28-July1
with the participation of Armenia, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Turkey
and Turkmenistan.
