HARVEST GALLERY presents Sara Anjargolian's "RETURN: Photographs from Armenia"
Artist Reception: Friday, May 6, 2005 - 6:00pm - 10:00pm
Exhibition Dates: May 6 - May 8, 2005
Harvest Gallery: 938 North Brand Blvd., Glendale, CA
Glendale, CA (May 2) - Harvest Gallery is proud to present an
exhibition of photographs entitled "RETURN: Photographs from Armenia"
by Sara Anjargolian, from May 6, 2005 through May 8, 2005 in Glendale,
California.
A Californian since the age of six, Anjargolian lived and worked in
Armenia from 2002 to 2004. Traveling extensively throughout the region,
Anjargolian captured moments in the lives of Armenians through her
photography and writing.
"RETURN" features photographs taken from varying layers of perspectives
including that of a repatriate embracing her homeland, an Armenian
woman struggling with disparate identities, and a stranger attempting
to understand a vaguely familiar place.
The photographs also portray faces of a post-Soviet region in
transition and include images such as an elderly woman with a rooster
on her lap, the weather-beaten face of a candle seller, and a church
caretaker bathed in a ray of sunlight. "Anjargolian's lens reveals
the melancholic beauty of a fiercely proud nation encountering the
challenges of transition, says Aris Ajand of Harvest Gallery."
Born in London, Anjargolian moved to Los Angeles from Tehran in
the late 1970s. She graduated from UCLA and went on to receive a
Juris Doctorate from UC Berkeley's School of Law. In 2002, she won a
Fulbright scholarship to work in Armenia and to teach at the American
University of Armenia's Law department. Anjargolian currently resides
in Los Angeles where she serves as a policy advisor and deputy city
attorney in the Los Angeles City Attorney's office.
"RETURN" will be on display from Friday, May 6, 2005 through Sunday,
May 8, 2005. Gallery hours are Tuesday - Sunday from 11:00 am to
7:00 pm.
