In Yerevan, Jews Honor Victims of Armenian Genocide
Tuesday, May 3 2005
YEREVAN, Armenia - The Jewish community of Armenia visited the
memorial built in honor of the millions of victims who perished in
the Genocide against the Armenian people, a brutal crime committed
under the Ottoman Empire just 90 year ago. This great tragedy was
responsible for the death of at least 1.5 million Armenians at that
time, a figure which is often estimated to be even larger.
Every year on this day, millions of people come out to public
commemorations in order to pay tribute to these innocent victims and
to lay flowers on the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial.
Among those attending this year's event were a sizeable group of
Jews, representing the Jewish community of Armenia. While visiting
the memorial, Chief Rabbi of Armenia Gersh-Meir Burshtein led the
delegation in laying a wreath featuring a yellow Magen David, to
express their solidarity with the Armenian people on this tragic
anniversary.
