TBILISI, May 4 -- Twelve ethnic Armenians - soldiers of the Georgian
army have left their unit, deployed in the city of Akhaltsikhi,
southern Georgia, explaining it by "oppressions on the part of fellow
soldiers."
They are all staying now in the premises of the administration of the
city of Akhalkalaki and are refusing to return to their unit. They say
that the "old timers" (the soldiers whose service record is longer)
demanded money from them and insulted them.
The Armenians were afraid to complain to their commanders for fear
of revenge. The Georgian defence ministry is now investigating the
incident.
