US President George Bush's statement that it is necessary to use rapid
reaction forces to foster democracy in the South Caucasus confirms
that the Armenian people are not alone in their struggle for democracy
in the country, the secretary of the opposition Justice bloc, Viktor
Dallakyan, said in the National Assembly of Armenia today.
The change of government in Armenia must not be carried out by outside
powers and must not be a palace coup, Dallakyan said. The change of
government in Armenia must be carried out by the Armenian people, he
said.
At the same time, it is necessary to carefully watch out for
developments abroad. In Dallakyan's view, one of the ways to change
the government is to reject the package of constitutional amendments
put forward for a referendum by the Armenian authorities.
[MP] Shavarsh Kocharyan, leader of the opposition National Democratic
Party, also said it was necessary to implement democratic reforms in
Armenia. Each step of Armenia away from the basics of democracy
threatens the fair resolution of the Karabakh conflict, Shavarsh
Kocharyan said. "The winner will be the side to the conflict which
implements democratic reforms sooner," he said.
