Yerevan, 5 October: Yerevan hopes that "the beginning of membership
negotiations with EU will motivate Turkey to open its borders with
Armenia as quick as possible," the press secretary of the Armenian
Foreign Ministry, Gamlet Gasparyan, has said.
Gasparyan expressed the hope that "Turkey will start making effective
steps to secure the rights of ethnic minorities and ensure freedom
of speech and other democratic values and norms".
"We also hope that Turkey will recognize the Armenian genocide during
the talks," Gasparyan said, adding that the European Parliament's
recent resolution had described the genocide recognition as an
"obligatory pre-condition" for Turkey's EU membership.
