THE REPRESENTATIVE OF HIS HOLINESS ARAM I MEETS WITH ECUMENICAL FIGURES IN
THE VATICAN
Bishop Nareg Alemezian, Ecumenical Officer of the Catholicosate of Cilicia
is currently participating in the XIth Synod of Bishops of the Catholic
Church in the Vatican. On the sidelines of the summit, the bishop has had
meetings with important ecumenical figures.
Bishop Alemezian met with the Archbishop of Quebec, Cardinal Mark Oulet on
October 4. The Cardinal spoke about his visit to Antelias three years ago as
the head of the Ecumenical Affairs of the Vatican. He expressed sadness at
not being able to welcome His Holiness in Canada on the occasion of his
Pontifical visit there.
Bishop Alemezian and the representative of the Catholicosate of All
Armenian, Bishop Norvan Zakarian met with the Head of the Jesuit Brotherhood
Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach the same day. Discussions revolved around the
theology of the Armenian Church. Fr. Kolvenbach also remembered his years in
Lebanon and his warm ties with Antelias.
Bishop Alemezian also met with the Head of the Ecumenical Affairs Department
of the Family of Anglican Churches, Ganonigos Gregory Cameron. The two
discussed relations between the Family of Oriental Orthodox Churches and the
Family of Anglican Churches and issues related to the official theological
dialogue between them.
The President of the Vatican's Ecumenical Affairs Department, Cardinal
Walter Kasper, threw a dinner party in honor of the ecumenical guests
participating in the meeting. Bishop Alemezian and Cardinal Kasper discussed
issues related to Armenian Church-Catholic Church relations and the official
theological dialogue between the Family of Oriental Orthodox Churches and
the Catholic Church.
The Synod will continue in small working sessions next week. Bishop
Alemezian will participate in the first group having discussions in English.
