SOCHI, August 31 - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov believes
that research into measures to create an integral anti-aircraft defense
of the CIS is the main result of the just-held exercise near Astrakhan.
"It is most important that for the first time over the past few years
an allied command post was created, a prototype of the CIS regional
anti-aircraft defense system," Ivanov said at a meeting with President
Vladimir Putin.
In case of cooperation with Belarus the system may cover European
areas, with Armenia, the Caucasus, and with the CSTO partners,
Central Asia.
Ivanov recalled that earlier joint anti-aircraft defense exercises
were held with Belarus and another such exercise with Kazakhstan is
due soon.
