ARS Update on Hurricane Relief Efforts
It is with great relief that the Armenian Relief Society of
Western USA (ARS-WR), Regional Executive reports that the
Houston, Texas community, along with the ARS-WR "Shogher" Chapter
escaped the full impact of Hurricane Rita in recent days. The
community members, along with ARS members, lived through the fear
of the impending devastation, but life is slowly returning to
normal. The ARS-WR Regional Executive was ready to provide any
assistance necessary to the region.
We are proud of our chapters across the Western states, which
continue to raise funds to help the Hurricane Katrina victims.
The San Francisco "Garin" and East Bay "Erepouni" Chapters took
advantage of the annual St. Gregory Church bazaar and set up
collection stations all over the bazaar site in San Francisco;
the Montebello "Nairy" Chapter set up a table at Holy Cross
Cathedral; the Studio City "Meghry" Chapter used the Armenian
Center as a collection station; other chapters got on the phone
and collected funds for the Hurricane victims. In Orange County,
California, where the "Sevan" and "Karni" Chapters are located, a
fundraiser is planned at Zov's Bistro in Tustin, on October 30.
Zov Karamardian, who is underwriting all the cost of the event,
was moved to do her part for the Armenian families, who had to
evacuate their homes.
The ARS-WR members took part in church services on Friday,
September 16, during the National Prayer Day announced by the
President George W. Bush. The service at St. Mary's Church in
Glendale, California, was televised during the "ARS Voice"
program on Horizon cable and satellite channels.
The ARS-WR Regional Executive, during a gathering of chapter
executives on September 22, reported on the communication
received from the ARS Eastern U.S.A., Regional Executive, about
ARS assistance provided to families who have escaped to Baton
Rouge, Louisiana, from the New Orleans area. Assistance to
families and schools are the primary concerns of the ARS. Public
and private schools, particularly in Louisiana, are being
contacted to assist them with school supplies, school uniforms,
play clothes and hygiene items for children who have transferred
from the Hurricane stricken regions.
"We feel responsible to make a difference in the lives of the
families and children, who have been devastated by Hurricane
Katrina", said Angela Savoian, Chair of the ARS-WR Regional
Executive. She told the ARS leadership, "We all know how burdened
schools are these days, and we are glad to assist those schools,
which have taken in evacuee children who have very basic needs."
She added, "We feel that this is the most effective way to impact
the lives of those who have lost everything."
The more the community will contribute in donations, the more the
ARS will be able to help the Hurricane Katrina and Rita victims.
As a reminder, the Western Prelacy has designated the ARS as one
of the agencies to contact for offering Gulf Coast disaster
relief donations. Send your tax-deductible donations payable to
the "ARS of Western U.S.A." 517 W. Glenoaks Blvd., Glendale, CA
91202-2812, and indicate that your donation is for the "Hurricane
Victims Fund".
