LEADER OF OPPOSITIONAL PARTY: WEST DOES NOT HAVE ITS CANDIDATURE TO PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN ARMENIA
Yerevan, April 17. ArmInfo. "Majority of political parties in Armenia
is in a westernized mood but the West doesn't have its candidate to
the coming Presidential elections",- the chairman of the "New Times"
oppositional party Aram Karapetyan said in the interview to the
ArmInfo correspondent.
"The Armenian Parliament speaker Arthur Baghdasaryan enjoyed the
West's support, but look what happened: the people who told me in
2005 that there would be serious cataclysms with the "Orinats Yerkir"
party in 2006, predict today that only 6 deputies will remain in the
"OY" faction", Karapetyan said. According to him, the voting in the
Parliament per the Program of the state property objects privatization
confirms justifiability of such forecasts, besides, the Armenia's
Defense Minister Serzh Sarkissyan is the only candidate to the
President post in the country's ruing circles. However, Karapetyan,
unlike his colleagues from the oppositional filed, categorically denies
the statements that the transaction for the Hrazdan TPP's fifth unit
sale to the Russian "Gaszprom" expresses the Russia's support for
S. Sarkissyan in the coming elections. "When big states support their
candidates, they do it imperceptibly", Karapetyan said.
As to his opinion, predominance of westernized moods among the Armenian
opposition is connected with the hope for the West's "wonder-working"
ability to conduct orange revolutions. "They want to believe in the
active support of the West in future without rejecting its financial
support", Karapetyan said. He noted that Russia carries out an
Armenianble policy which is expressed in the support of Nagorno
Karabakh. According to the oppositional party's leader, the sale of
the Hrazdan TPP's fifth unit means failure of the program of the
"Millennium Challenges" American corporation. "The American $235
mln for Armenia were intended as a price for return of 7 regions in
the safety area around Karabakh", Karapetyan said, having added that
the USA would strengthen the pressing on Armenia and Azerbaijan the
nearest months, as a result of which allotment of geopolitical forces
in the region, particularly, in Armenia, would change".
