GARABAGH MEDIATORS DIVIDED ON PEACE PROSPECTS

    Assa-Irada, Azerbaijan
    April 18 2006

The suggestions being individually made by the co-chairmen of the
OSCE Minsk Group mediating settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper
(Garabagh) conflict do not overlap yet, the head of the President's
Office international relations department, Novruz Mammadov, has told
AssA-Irada. He said this was why the date of the next meeting has
    not been agreed yet.

With regard to reports suggesting that the French and US co-chairs
had made specific suggestions towards negotiated settlement of the
conflict, Mammadov said it would be better to wait until all the
suggestions were grouped and made together.

The head of the department added that the Azerbaijani side would
define its position on the suggestions only after Armenia's response.

"It is very reassuring that the talks have intensified since
2006. We believe that if Armenia displays commonsense and takes
reasonable steps, certain progress can be made during the year. This
is something all the parties involved in the talks are interested in,"
    Mammadov said.
