    HIS HOLINESS ARAM I
IS BESTOWED WITH "THE PAX CHRISTI AWARD"
    IN THE UNITED STATES

On December 6, at a formal ceremony in Minnesota, USA, Saint John's
University presented its highest honor, the Pax Christi Award, to His
    Holiness Aram I.

The "Pax Christi" is a unique award granted by Saint John's University as
recognition to individuals of outstanding contribution in intellectual and
academic field, and in the area of social justice and peace. A number of
prominent individuals have received this award in the past.

Around 150 guests were invited to attend the ceremony. The ceremony was
    preceded by a luncheon.

The university's president introduced His Holiness Aram I as an important
international spiritual leader and religious figure, who has greatly
contributed to the establishment of peace and justice through his
intellectual and ecumenical services. The special testimonial, in part,
states: "Your skills at mediation, your deep respect for human rights, your
recognition that Christians, whatever their tradition, must witness to
peace, led you to ecumenical work early in your career. As a founding member
of the Middle East Council of Churches, while you were still in your
twenties, and as a delegate for the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia to the
Assemblies of the World Council of Churches, you soon earned a place at the
highest levels of ecumenical dialogue, culminating in your election as
Moderator of the WCC Central Committee in 1991, the first representative of
one of the ancient Eastern Churches to be elected to the highest position in
the WCC. You, who are very much a man of the modern world, represent a
people who have shared in the suffering and displacement that so deeply
    marked the 20th Century."

His Holiness then expressed his gratitude for the honor, considering it a
new incentive for additional service aimed at promotion of inter-faith
dialogue, ecumenical values and peace with justice. He then delivered a
lecture entitled "Challenges facing Christianity in the Middle East."

The Prelates of the Eastern and Western prelacies of United States,
Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan and Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, the Dean
of the Seminary, V. Rev. Shahe Panossian and the chairman of the Executive
Council of the Eastern Prelacy, Jack Mardoyian, also attended the ceremony.
