KARABAKH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA CAPTIVATES AUDIENCES AROUND ARMENIA
On the evening of June 27, 2006, AGBU-sponsored Karabakh Chamber
Orchestra (KCO), under the direction of the celebrated conductor
Gevork Muradian, delivered a momentous performance to a captive
audience at Yerevan's Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall. Playing works by
Gomidas, Vivaldi and Bach, the concert was part of the "One Nation,
One Culture" All-Armenian Cultural Festival that has taken KCO to
various regions of Armenia.
Before their visit to Yerevan, KCO, with the support of Archbishop
Bargev Martirossian, head of the Artsakh (Karabakh) Diocese of the
Armenian Church, made a pilgrimage to Mardakert and later toured
Berdzor. Gevork Muradian promised to perform a few concerts every year
in Berdzor, located by the Lachin corridor. KCO's participation in the
"One Nation, One Culture" festival not only introduced the young
orchestra to audiences across Armenia but also helped foster a sense
of cultural unity between Armenia and Karabakh.
Founded two years ago with funding by AGBU, KCO has attracted a number
of gifted graduates of the Yerevan State Conservatory, and continues
to increase its enrollment of musicians from Karabakh. Under the
leadership of Gevork Muradian, KCO has helped revitalize the cultural
life of the region. "After the victory in war NKR is now facing
another war - a cultural war - which requires efforts and finances,"
acknowledges Muradian of the significance of the orchestra. "I will do
my best to elevate the Karabakh Chamber Orchestra...we will tour
regularly and our performances of masterpieces of classical art will
contribute much to the international recognition of Karabakh."
KCO has opened the eyes of the people of Karabakh in recognizing the
importance of classical music. Together with the administration of the
Karabakh Music School, Gevork Muradian has started a music college
where young violinists, cellists and other future professional
musicians study today. Muradian's future plans include adding wind
instrument and opera music classes.
While KCO's plans may appear ambitious, both Muradian and his
orchestra have demonstrated their determination to set their standards
high. They offer new concert selections for each of their
performances, gaining the reputation as one of the best chamber
orchestras in the South Caucasus. KCO has already received a number of
invitations to perform abroad.
Established in 2004, the Karabakh Chamber Orchestra (KCO) consists of
26 members and is based in Stepanakert, Karabakh. For more information
