DISPUTE OVER URANIUM MINES GOES ON

    23 June 06

On June 23 the Armenian branch of the American company Global
Gold Mining elucidated the dispute involving the company and the
Ministry of Environmental Protection. Several days ago the minister
of environmental protection Vardan Ayvazyan voiced strictures against
Global Gold Mining. In particular, Vardan Ayvazyan accused the company
of exploring uranium in Armenia without a license. Ashot Poghosyan
met with the Club of Economic Reporters June 23 and said the company
is not doing uranium research in Armenia, it is only exploring the
mine of Getik to find out the amount of uranium and possibility of
exporting. The director of Global Gold Mining in Armenia announced
that they are aware that they need a special license of the government
to export, and if there is uranium in Getik, they will bid for an
    export license.

Ashot Poghosyan finds it difficult to say what the reason of the
negative attitude of the Ministry of Environmental Protection is. He
says that the Ministry of Environmental Protection is supposed to
control companies in the mining industry. As for the reason why the
Armenian branch of Global Gold Mining became the target of strictures
of Vardan Ayvazyan, the director advises to ask the minister of
environmental protection. Ashot Poghosyan refutes the rumors that
Vardan Ayvazyan is likely to seize the mines operated by the company
and give this profitable business to a company that he prefers. The
director of the Armenian branch of Global Gold Mining says they are
now exploring the mine, which requires high costs, and the company
does not get any profit. The company has already invested over 6
million dollars. Ashot Poghosyan says even if the mine is operated,
it will take a long time to repay the exploration costs.
