TARIFF FOR NATURAL GAS RISES BY MORE THAN 50% IN ARMENIA

YEREVAN, MARCH 10, NOYAN TAPAN. The tariff for natural gas rose in
Armenia by more than 50% and 90 thousand drams were fixed instead of
the present 59 thousand drams (about 131 U.S. dollars) for 1000 cubic
metres. The RA Commission Regulating Public Services made such a
decision on March 10. So, the claim of the "HayRusgasard," by which it
was proposed to fix the tariff 108 thousand drams, was partly
satisfied. The tariff rose by more than 85% for big consumers,
becoming 146.5 dollars from 79.18 U.S. dollars. The new tariffs will
    function from April 10.

It became known during the sitting that "HayRusgasard" signed an
agreement with the "Gas Export" enterprise, subsidiary enterprise of
the "Gasprom" gas supplying company still on December 28, 2005.
According to the agreement, the tariff for the natural gas imported
Armenia will become 110 dollars from April 1.

According to independent economist Eduard Aghajanov, in the case of
the populations' 21.1% usage of the total volumes of the imported
natural gas, their tariffs musn't be more by 54 of the tariff fixed
for big consumers. He proposed to impelement raising of tariffs for
all consumers in proportion. In this case the tariff for gas used by
the population mustn't be more than 72 drams.

Manuk Gasparian, a NA Deputy present at the sitting, proposed
Commission Chairman Robert Nazarian to postpone their making
decision. But, the latter refused that mentioning that in the case of
not changing the tariffs, "HayRusgasard" will incur a loss of 70 mln
    drams a day.
