JAPANESE EMPEROR NOTES INTEREST IN EXPANSION OF AZERI TIES

[Presenter over video of meeting] Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev
is currently paying an official visit to Japan at the invitation
of the Japanese government. The president met Japanese Emperor
Akihito today. The Azerbaijani president's wife, Mehriban Aliyeva,
also attended the meeting during which relations between the two
countries were discussed.
Japanese Emperor Akihito stressed that the foundation for the
relations between Azerbaijan and Japan was laid during great leader
[late president] Heydar Aliyev's visit to Japan in 1998. The emperor
said that there is now a legal basis for expanding relations. He also
noted that he is interested in further development of cooperation
with Azerbaijan.
President Ilham Aliyev also delivered a speech at the Japan
Institute of International Affairs in Tokyo today. He touched upon
the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagornyy Karabakh conflict. He said that
separatism and territorial claims are behind the Armenian authorities'
policies.
