PRICES OF FOOD COMMODITIES GROW BY 1.7% IN ARMENIA IN OCTOBER 2006 ON DECEMBER 2005

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 2, NOYAN TAPAN. A 1.7% inflation was registered in
the Armenian food commodity market in October 2006 on December 2005,
and a 7.3% inflation - in October 2006 on October 2005. Prices of
food commodities grew by 0.5% in the country in October on September
2006. According to the RA National Statistical Service, a 31.5% price
growth was registered in the commodity group of vegetables and potato
in October 2006 on October 2005. In the indicated period, the price
growth of onion made 23.3%, of cucumber - 29.4%, garlic - 33.8%,
cabbage - 34.4%, carrot - 44%, beet - 49.9% and potato - 50.3%. A
0.1% price fall was registered in the commodity group of vegetables
and potato in October on September 2006, mainly due to a 2.7-14.5%
fall in prices of cabbage, onion, beet and potato. In the same period,
there was a growth in the prices of garlic (0.9%), cauliflower (7.2%),
cucumber (36.8%), eggplant (37.7%), green pepper (41.6%) and tomato
(65.1%). The 23.8% price growth registered in the fruit commodity
group in October 2006 on October 2005 was mainly conditioned by a
growth in the prices of apple (33.9%), pear (44.5%), plum (2.3fold),
peach (2.7fold), watermelon (28.5%) and melon (95.8%). A 1.5% fruit
price growth was registered in Armenia in October on September 2006,
mainly due to a growth in prices of strawberry (5.1%), plum (15.6%),
peach (22.4%), watermelon (19%) and melon (41.5%). The prices of
pine-apple, pomegranate, pear, apple, banana and grapes declined by
1.5-46.3% in the indicated period. A 8.8% price growth was registered
in the commodity group of fish products in October on September 2006,
as a result of a 10.7% and 11.1% growth in prices of smoked and fresh
white fish respectively. The average price of eggs grew by 20.4%
in October 2006 on October 2005, by 8.2% - in October on September
2006. A 0.1-1.8% price growth was registered in the commodity groups
of confectionery, other foodstuffs, bread products, milk products,
coffee, tea and cocoa in October on September 2006. During the
indicated period, the prices of butter and vegetable oil declined
by 3.1% and 0.4%, while prices of meat products, soft and alcoholic
drinks, and cigarettes remained at the previous month's level.
