  • Did some of the organized Jewish community in Turkey support the Armenian Genocide?

I am an Jewish-American professor in Eastern Europe currently working on book concerning the response or should I say cover up of the Armenian genocide.

Recently, I was contacted to do a opinion piece in a major American newspaper chain on a dissenting view from the formal view of the Israeli government.

I only have a couple of days to finish this in a timely matter.

I have been shocked and saddened by Jewish denial of the Armenian genocide in Turkey.

In reading some Israeli books on the subject I have found that principled Jews claim that some Jews in Turkey at the time of the genocide opposed Armenians as much or even more than Turks, that many of them resented what they called Armenian anti-Semitism and felt that they were in economic competition with the very strong Armenian community. In Israel doing research have heard stories of Jewish activists in Istanbul actively helping the secret police apprehend Armenians for execution and/or deportation.

Some of the Jewish authors I have read have stated that there were many cases where Jews in Turkey actively supported the genocide. But, I have found little documentation on the issue, and I hope that some of your readers can help me locate some sources and quotes on this matter.

If there was any degree of support in the Jewish community for the crimes against the Armenian population in Turkey it would certainly be a strong reason for the Armenian Genocide Denial prevalent in Israel and in the Jewish community around the the world.

No Genocide, then there can be no blame for Jewish complicity in this terrible crime.

So, I would much appreciate any information, sources, quotations that any of you scholars on the subject could provide me.

I am in your debt for that.

Although I don't support restrictions of freedom of speech on any issue. The controversy in France can't help but increase awareness of the Armenian Genocide issue.
