YEREVAN, OCTOBER 25, NOYAN TAPAN. Works of French literature
were translated in Armenia not only in the Soviet years but are
periodically being translated today as well. But, as translator,
literary critic Alexander Topchian mentioned during the event dedicated
to literature in translation organized at the Writers' Union of Armenia
on October 24, events dedicated to all the branches of art, excluding
literature, will be held in Armenia on the occasion of the year of
Armenia in France. In A.Topchian's words, the French literature with
its relations had a direct influence on works of writers of all the
nations, including the Armenian ones. He also mentioned that works of
more that 100 Armenian writers writing in foreign languages who live
in different colonies of Diaspora are being translated into Armenian
    during the recent years.

"French writers are known in Armenia owing to translations. It's
time for we get to know with them Armenian writers writing in foreign
languages as well," Al.Topchian mentioned. In words of Levon Ananian,
the Chairman of the Writers' Union of Armenia, not only French but also
European and American literature was mainly presented to the Armenian
reader with the help of "Garun" (spring) magazine. In his words, during
the independence years work of "Garun" was continued by the "Apollo"
publishing house which published a series of books in translation
consisting of 25 volumes which works of Camus, Faulkner, Rambo, etc.
were involved. L.Ananian mentioned that Al.Topchian, whose heritage
in translation makes about 50 titles of books, has a considerable
contribution especially in the affair of presenting in translation
valuable works of the French literature to the Armenian reader.
