ROMANIAN PREMIER PROPOSES LIBERAL SENATOR AS COUNTRY'S REPRESENTATIVE TO EC

The premier has nominated a Liberal party senator to serve as Romania's
representative to the European Commission, with the country set to
join the bloc next year.
Sen. Varujan Vosganian's nomination by Prime Minister Calin Popescu
Tariceanu must be approved by European Commission President Jose
Manuel Barroso and European lawmakers.
Barroso must also decide on the area of responsibility for the new
Romanian and Bulgarian commissioners, who will take up their posts
once their countries join the bloc Jan. 1.
Vosganian, 48, chair of the Senate's budget and finance committee,
is known for supporting free market policies. He is also one of the
fervent backers of the country's flat tax of 16 percent, which Romania
introduced in 2005 to replace a progressive taxation scheme ranging
from 18 to 40 percent.
A mathematician and economist, Vosganian is also a writer and poet.
An ethnic Armenian, he heads the National Union of (Ethnic) Armenians
in Romania.
The European Commission consists of 25 representatives one from each
EU nation.
