    HIS HOLINESS MEETS WITH PATRIARCH TARMOUNI


    His Holiness Aram I met with Patriarch Nerses Bedros XIX (Tarmouni) in
    Bikfaya on September 14. Bishops Vartan Ashkarian, Manuel Batakian, Krikor
    Gabroyan, Hovhannes Teirouzian, Neshan Keheyan and Vartabeds Antranig
    Geranian, Kevork Yeghiayan as well as Mr. Sarkis Nadjarian accompanied the
    spiritual leader of the Armenian catholics of Lebanon.

    Also present at the meeting were Bishop Kegham Khatcherian, Primate of the
    Diocese of Lebanon, Bishop Nareg Alemezian, Ecumenical Officer of the
    Catholicosate of Cilicia, and V. Rev. Fr. Krikor Chiftjian, Communications
    Officer of the Catholicosate of Cilicia.

    The spiritual leaders discussed various issues related to the current
    situation in Lebanon and the recent regional and international developments.
    They also talked about important issues in Armenian, Christian and national
    life, as well as the preparatory works for the third Armenia-Diaspora
    conference in Yerevan.

    Praising the united stand of the Armenian community of Lebanon and its
    unified political approach to the recent developments in the country, the
    Pontiff and the Patriarch stressed that the community should follow this
    path as a source of its strength. The two spiritual leaders also discussed
    the new challenges Churches face within the context of ecumenical and
    inter-religious relations.
