YEREVAN, April 2. /ARKA/. The World Bank (WB) has awarded the poverty
monitoring project in Armenia for its contribution to the country's
development. Donna Dowsett-Coirolo, WB Country Director for Armenia,
Azerbaijan and Georgia, pointed out that the project received the award
"Improving life in Europe and Central Asia".
Dowsett-Coirolo also reported that, since 1990, poverty assessment
in Armenia has improved the skills of the RA Statistical Service in
collecting the information on the population's living standards.
She pointed out the importance of impartial data for monitoring the
population's living standards and for elaborating scientifically
based health care, education and social protection policies.
The awarding ceremony was held in Washington, USA, on April 1. The WB
jury selected 22 programs from Europe and Central Asia. The programs
reflect the WB's strategy of poverty reduction and improvement of
living standards in the poorest countries.
The RA Statistical Service conducts comprehensive annual surveys
to be involved in the process of making decisions on social
policy. Specifically, survey results played a key role in elaborating
a program of selective assistance and free medical aid.
The annual report "Social picture in the RA and poverty" is published
in Armenian and English.
