ACCORDING TO TURKISH MP, ISRAELI PRESIDENT SAID THAT DISCUSSION OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE ISSUE BY KNESSET WILL GIVE NO RESULT

TEL AVIV, APRIL 8, NOYAN TAPAN - ARMENIANS TODAY. "All those Israeli
officials with whom we have met, including the president Shimon
Peres, have assured us that the initiative to discuss the issue of
the Armenian Genocide at Knesset (Israeli parliament) will give
no result". According to the Turkish press, Hasan Murad Mercan,
the head of the Turkish delegation currently on a visit to Israel,
chairman of the foreign relations committee of the Turkish parliament,
made this statement.
Speaking about discussion of the issue of the Armenian Genocide at
Knesset, the Turkish MP said that representatives of Israel also
oppose the adoption of resolution 106 on the Armenian Genocide which
was discussed by the U.S. House of Representatives last year.
"When the Armenian bill was put to the vote at the House of
Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, a number of Israeli
statesmen, in the person of president Peres, warned Americans that
adoption of the bill would be a great mistake... And today a small
party put forward a similar initiative in Israel. During meetings
with Israeli officials, including the country's president, we were
given assurances that this initiative will not be discussed, " Murad
Mercan said.
The Turkish parliamentary delegation met with Shimon Peres, the Knesset
speaker Dalia Itzik, the head of the Turkish-Israeli parliamentary
friendship group Avshalom Vilan. A meeting with the Israeli foreign
minister Tzipi Livni is scheduled for today.
To recap, a decision to discuss the issue of the Armenian Genocide was
made at the March 26 sitting of Knesset. Leader of Meretz socialist
party Hayim Oron stated the initiative on discussing this issue.
