VAZGEN MANUKIAN: I AM OPPOSITIONIST, BUT WILL DO MY BEST FOR GOVERNMENT TO BE SUCCESSFUL

YEREVAN, APRIL 17, NOYAN TAPAN. The opposition could win the
presidential elections if it came up with other format and
slogans. Vazgen Manukian, the Chairman of the National Democratic
Union (NDU), expressed such an opinion at the April 17 press
conference. He affirmed that if it had not been for first President
Levon Ter-Petrosian, another one would be instead of him, and in
any case Serge Sargsian would come across much difficulties during
the elections.
V. Manukian considers that after the positive decision of the
Constitutional Court on the results of the elections the opposition,
including the first President, should have congratulated S. Sargsian
and recognized the latter's victory.
V. Manukian on his own initiative met with S. Sargsian and discussed
the changes to be implemented in the country. According to him, they
will be more efficient "if S. Sargsian's personal interest coincides
with the state interest." According to V. Manukian, the last 10 years
were years of stagnation. Currently changes are inevitable in the
country, and the more profound are they the longer the government
being formed today will work.
According to V. Manukian, part of society wishes the government
to fail.
Mentioning that such a position is not acceptable for him, the NDU
leader said: "I am an oppositionist, but will do my best for this
government to be successful."
Expressing satisfaction with Tigran Sargsian's appointment to the
Prime Minister's post, V. Manukian characterized the latter as a
clever specialist and a decent person, who does not belong to any
clan or party. He also spoke positively about appointments of the
Defence Minister and Foreign Minister.
In response to journalists' questions, V. Manukian said that no post
has been offered to him personally and he has not discussed such an
issue with the newly elected President.
