"The law has not been changed. It is simply beyond my understanding why
the goods used to be tax freed at a lower price", declared Tsolvard
Gevorgian, Chairwoman of the Union of Armenian Merchants, doubting
even the crediting of the levied funds to the state budget.
"It was only after Serzh Sargssian's strong consideration of the
problem that they had to observe the law."
The Chairwoman also stated that "The Law on Simplified Tax" was drafted
by their Union and for 8 years they had been struggling for it. "Our
economy was able to develop only due to the simplified tax, but they
made so many changes to it that it finally became a monster. And now
they abolish the law without a substitute."
According to Tsolvard Gevorgian minor merchants still survive but
they are not able to develop their business.
"The officials set up their business in the city center and they do
not pay any taxes. As a result minor merchants lost their consumers. I
sold my store and went out of business as I do not want to compete
with anyone."
By the way the Union of Merchants has 23 branches throughout Armenia.
