LYONS, APRIL 23, NOYAN TAPAN - ARMENIANS TODAY. The fate of the
Armenian monument erected in one of Lyons' squares has become
a subject of debate between the city municipality and judicial
authorities. Remaining faithful to his promise to Armenians, the mayor
of Lyons Gerard Collomb allowed to erect an Armenian monument in one
of the city's squares. However, members of the union on preservation
of the historical nature of the city reminded that this square is on
the UNESCO list of squares subject to preservation so no changes can
be made here and the Armenian monument has to be removed. The union
members applied to Lyons administrative court that ruled the Armenian
monument to be removed from the square. The fact that the complaints
against the monument have been sustained does not mean that it has
to be destroyed.
In all likelihood the monument will be moved to some other place.
