President of Armenia: Attempts of forceful opposition to fight for
people's right to self-determination in South Caucasus region are
fraught with serious military and geopolitical consequences

ArmInfo. The tragic events in South Ossetia proved that the attempts of
forceful opposition to the fight of people's right to
self-determination in the South Caucasus region are fraught with
serious military and geopolitical consequences, Armenian President
Serzh Sargsyan said in his interview with the Austrian newspaper "Der
Standard", the Armenian presidential press-service reports.
According to Sargsyan, the recent events distinctly demonstrated the
real threat of the armament race in the South Caucasus, ungrounded
increase in military budgets and militant statements. "At the same
time, they proved that settlement of similar conflicts should be based
on the free expression of will of people fighting for the right to
self- determination, and decisions should be based on this will, as a
different approach will inevitably lead to ethnic cleansing and
infringement of the international humanitarian law", the president
stressed. He added that the specified events also revealed the
significance of efficient operation of infrastructures, main lines,
road junctions, pipelines existing in the region, as well as the
importance of formation of more spacious systems.
