YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 4, NOYAN TAPAN. Analysing the programs presented
by the RA presidential candidates, their capabilities and political
biographies, the Democratic Party of Armenia (DPA) considers that
at the current preelection stage there are no sufficient grounds
for unreserved support to this or that candidate. Aram Sargsian, the
Chairman of the Democratic Party of Armenia, stated at the February
4 press conference.
According to him, as far back as in 1998 DPA had given a political
estimation to the previous regime and expected the newly formed power,
which, by the way, they supported at that time, to eradicate the
phenomena formed under the previous regime and to call some people
to criminal liability. "Unfortunately, Mr Kocharian did not do it
and today a situation has been formed when those guilty have not been
punished and the negative phenomena existing in 1990-97 have deepened
for even more," A. Sargsian said. Therefore, according to him, they
became a strict opposition to the current authorities as well.
A. Sargsian said that DPA is unequivocally against the return of the
previous authorities to the political sphere. At the same time, he
said that it is not clear yet how this "clan oligarch" system will
be liquidated and whether the current President will really leave
politics. "If R. Kocharian in this or that format is again in the
newly formed power, no serious essential changes will happen in the
country, as the formed system is his, he is very content with that
system's activity, and I do not think that he would like to make
system changes," the DPA Chairman emphasized.
In response to the question whom DPA will support if Serge Sargsian
and Levon Ter-Petrosian pass to the second tour, S. Sargsian said
that he does not think that L. Ter-Petrosian has such capabilities
to pass to the second tour. And according to the DPA leader, they
will touch upon the issue of supporting S. Sargsian when there are
the respective guarantees.
