SARGSYAN LEADS IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN - SOCIOLOGISTS
Sociologists predict the victory of Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan in
the Armenian presidential election on February 19."Prime Minister
Serzh Sargsyan enjoys the steady support of 55-60% of voters, which
is a indication of victory in the first round of the election,"
Sociometer Independent Sociological Center Director Agaron Adibekian
said in comments on six polls conducted by his company.
The three top candidates are Sargsyan; Orinats Erkir (Country of Law)
opposition party leader and ex-speaker Artur Bagdasarian (13%); and
Armenian first president Levon Ter-Petrossian (11%), Adibekian told a
Wednesday press conference in Yerevan.
The other six candidates will receive less than 5% of the votes, he
said.
Armenians would prefer Bagdasarian as the common candidate of the
opposition but the opposition is more likely to unite around Ter-
Petrossian, the researcher said.
The British company Populus, which also held a poll in Armenia, said
that Sargsyan was the leading candidate.
A total of 50.7% of the respondents supported Sargsyan, company
founder and director Andrew Cooper told the press conference.
He said, 13.4% of the respondents supported Bagdasarian and 12.6%
gave preference to Ter-Petrossian.
