"DECISION OF ZHARANGUTIUN ON SUPPORTING LEVON TER-PETROSIAN FINDS POSITIVE RESPONSE," ANAHIT BAKHSHIAN SAYS

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 13, NOYAN TAPAN. After making public the decision of
the Zharangutiun (Heritage) party on supporting Levon Ter-Petrosian, a
candidate running for the post of the RA President, numerous responses
have been received, the overwhelming majority of the authors of which
    welcomed it.

This statement was made by Anahit Bakhshian, a member of the
parliamentarian faction of the party, at the press conference held
    on February 13.

In the words of Stepan Safarian, another member of the faction, those,
who have a negative attitude towards the decision on supporting
the first President, believe that the party should have called
for voting for another opposition candidate. That candidate could
be Vahan Hovhannisian, a member of the ARF Dashnaktsutiun Bureau,
Arthur Baghdasarian, the Chairman of the Orinats Yerkir (Country of
Law) party, as well as Vazgen Manukian, the Leader of the National
Democratic Union. "The position of Zharangutiun passed a rather long
way: we wanted to see unification among the opposition candidates
and had mentioned that the unification of Vahan Hovhannisian, Arthur
Baghdasarian, Levon Ter-Petrosian, and Vazgen Manukian is desirable,"
    Stepan Safarian mentioned.

When making a decision on supporting the first President, as Stepan
Safarian stated, Zharangutiun was not led by an expectation for getting
any post in the future. "We are not making a bargain of posts," he said
adding that they have discussed the approaches of principle existing
only with regard to political problems during the negotiations with
    the headquarters of Levon Ter-Petrosian.
