ARA PAPIAN: RECOGNITION OF KOSOVO'S INDEPENDENCE JURIDICAL PRECEDENT
IN INTERNATIONAL LAW
YEREVAN, 18.02.08. DE FACTO. The declaration of Kosovo's independence
is an obvious juridical act, though utterly politically motivated, a
historian and diplomat, RA Ambassador to Canada in 2001-2006 Ara
Papian told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.
In his words, such a juridical act creates a juridical precedent
irrespective of political declarations. `International law is
traditionally based on the principle of the states' supreme equality.
The principle fixed in the U. N. Charter runs that international
disputes must be settled on the basis of this principle. The
recognition of Kosovo's independence is undoubtedly a juridical
precedent in international law', he noted.
At the same time the Armenian diplomat noted Serbia was a member of
international community and had the same rights as other countries.
`Why speaking of `territorial integrity' they deny this principle to
Serbia, not Azerbaijan. Especially taking into consideration the fact
that Azerbaijan pursued long and vicious policy of genocide against
its citizens of Armenian nationality: ethnic cleansings in
Nakhijevan, Soumgait, Baku, Kirovabad and other places, and now is
still waging a war against Armenian autonomy in Nagorno-Karabakh',
Papian underscored.
