PRESIDENT OF ARMENIA COMES OUT WITH A STATEMENT ON FEB 19 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

ArmInfo. Armenian President Robert Kocharyan came out with a statement
on the Feb 19 presidential election in Armenia, Wednesday.
According to the statement sent to ArmInfo by the Armenian presidential
press-service , the presidential election was held freely and fairly,
in compliance with the Armenian legislation and international
commitments assumed by the country. The president thanked all
members of election commissions, election agents, observers, but
first and foremost the voters themselves for holding the election
at a worthy level. Election is always a boiling point of political
resistance and may cause intensification of tension and split in
the society, Kocharyan says. However, the ability to lose worthily
in politics is also an important component of democratic culture, he
added. During the post-electoral period each citizen should realize
that the president of the republic cannot divide the society into
"friends" and "foreigners". "I am sure that newly-elected president
Serzh Sargsyan will be able to consolidate the society and form an
atmosphere of mutual understanding and tolerance. Despite serious
achievements, Armenia faces a lot of serious problems. People still
have an unused potential. The Republic of Armenia should become one
of the most competitive and rapidly developing countries of the world,
and this needs consolidation and consistency", Kocharyan says.
