Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received a delegation led by US
senator Sam Brownback on February 20.
During the meeting, Presdient Aliyev noted that relations between
Azerbaijan and United States are successfully developing in all
spheres, and said the two countries enjoy significant bilateral
relations.
Senator Brownback also expressed satisfaction with Azerbaijan's
development and discussed further bilateral cooperation within the
energy sector.
Later, Sen. Brownback met with Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister
Hafiz Pashayev and delivered a lecture on "The New Vision of the
Great Silk Road Region" at the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy.
Sen. Brownback stressed Azerbaijan's achievements through the years
of independence, as well as problems Azerbaijan may face in the
near future.
Touching upon Kosovo, Sen. Brownback said that the resolution of the
conflict is not a precedent for other conflicts, including Nagorno
Karabakh.
"The resolution of Karabakh conflict will be found. Kosovo will not
set a precedent for Karabakh," Brownback said.
He also stressed the need to intensify talks for the complete
elimination of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, which bars
direct aid from the US government to Azerbaijan's government.
Since the events of September 11, US President George Bush has
suspended Section 907 on an annual basis, although its complete
abolishment has not yet been achieved.
