NO CANDIDATE IS ABLE TO WIN IN FIRST TOUR, ZHARANGUTIUN REPRESENTATIVE CONSIDERS

    Jan 24, 2008

YEREVAN, JANUARY 24, NOYAN TAPAN. At present the political resource
of opposition candidates is sufficient for the elections to be held
in two tours. Hovsep Khurshudian, the Spokesperson of the Zharangutiun
(Heritage) party, said at the January 24 press conference. He said that
if the elections end in one tour, it will mean that the authorities
have rigged them, as there is no candidate, pro-governmental or
opposition, who is able to win in the first tour. Zharangutiun's
Spokesperson reminded to the journalists that lately the party has
called the opposition candidates for unification. "It will be a big
mistake if that victorious unification does not take place, as there
is a danger of dispersion of votes," he said.

    H. Khurshudian said that they will give Zharangutiun's seats in
electoral commissions to extra-parliamentary opposition forces,
the Armenian National Movement, Hanrapetutiun, People's Party of
Armenia, National Democratic Union parties. He added that Zharangutiun
declined the request of giving seats to the People's Party, as PP
leader Tigran Karapetian has repeatedly declared his not opposition,
    but centripetal position.

According to Zaruhi Postanjian, a member of the NA Zharangutiun
faction, the atmosphere of fear created in the country before the start
of the official election campaign preserves up to this day. Besides,
she mentioned, the Republican Party of Armenia has started spreading
printed materials for the purpose of agitation long ago, which is a
    violation of law.
