A spokesman for the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry has questioned the
effectiveness of OSCE monitoring on the contact line between the
Azerbaijani and Armenian troops.
"As soon as it is planned to conduct monitoring, Armenians stop
firing at the positions of the Azerbaijani army. And the cease-fire
violations resume as soon as the monitoring ends. I think it is
necessary to raise a question with the personal representative of the
OSCE chairman-in-office, Andrzej Kasprzyk, about the effectiveness
of monitoring if it is announced in advance," the Azerbaijani website
Day.az quoted Eldar Sabiroglu as saying at a news conference in Baku
on 29 January.
BBCM note: The OSCE conducts regular monitoring on the contact line
between the Azerbaijani and Armenian troops to record cease-fire
violations. It is usually reported that no incidents occurred during
the monitoring. However, both the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides
regularly report cease-fire violations along the front line.
