"If Serzh Sarkissian does not meet the demands posed by the opposition
at a recent rally the opposition will raise the issue of Sarkissian's
resignation during an August 1 rally," member of the political board
of the Hanrapetutiun (Republic) Party, Suren Sureniants, told a press
conference on July 18.
Suren Sureniants was much exhausted today as he had spent the whole
night in Northern Avenue with the sit-down strikers.
"The authorities have fourteen days to meet our demands. We have
already given them many chances to better but they sit idle. Armenia
has not got new leadership. Serzh Sarkissian has simply assumed the
post of a manager of Kocharian's vicious system," said Sureniants.
During the hundred days of his office Serzh Sarkissian has taken no
positive step. Just on the contrary, he has deepened the social gap
and suffered an unprecedented and resounding defeat in view of the
Karabakh conflict resolution.
Sarkissian has only attempted to restore the Armenian-Turkish relations
although the idea has already devalued.
"I would like Sarkissian to restore the Armenian-Turkish relations
in a dignified way on the basis of the principle proposed by the
opposition and focusing on the prospect of bilateral relations."
As of Kocharian's recent statement during which he enumerated the
steps he would take if he were a president, Sureniants said he "the
statement sounded to be made by a vindictive and provincial governor.
Kocharian was given ten years to jail Ter-Petrossian. But he didn't
do it as he had no incontrovertible evidence. Finally, Kocharian could
have imprisoned Ter-Petrossian on March 1 as he was Armenia's President
then. Kocharian didn't forgive Ashot Bleyan, Mushegh Saghatelian and
many others. Why should he forgive Ter-Petrossian? Let Kocharian not
give lessons of kindness. He simply tries to conceal his misdeeds
with his grandiloquent statements.
The current antagonistic atmosphere reigning in the country is
resulted by Kocharian's wily tactics. He dug trenches in his country
dividing people into two groups-partisans and non-partisans. Obviously,
Kocharian makes a statement after each opposition rally. He fears lest
Serzh Sarkissian should meet the opposition's demands. Kocharian has
known Sarkissian for 20-25 years and he probably knows more about
him. Every time he tries to blackmail Sarkissian. The latter had
better draw conclusions from this," said Sureniants.
Sureniants thinks Sarkissian should be concerned about Kocharian's
recent statement as Kocharian hinted at Sarkissian's weakness. "The
opposition doesn't need to worry about Kocharian's statement."
