DEFENCE SPHERE TO BE IN FOCUS OF RA GOVERNMENT'S ATTENTION, SEYRAN OHANIAN STATES

YEREVAN, JUNE 9, NOYAN TAPAN. This year defence problems will be in
the focus of RA government's attention. RA Defence Minister Seyran
Ohanian stated at the June 9 meeting with journalists. According
to him, the government will come up with a legislative initiative,
the goal of which is to expand civil control over Armed Forces. A
special attention will be paid to social problems of freedom-fighters,
perished and disabled, as well as current servicemen.
The Minister said that this year the law On Defence is envisaged to
be adopted. At present the bill is at the stage of discussion. This
year it is also envisaged to modernize Armed Forces armament and
military equipment. In particular, communication automatic management
system, border positions' engineering equipment will be improved,
and the number of fighting positions will be increased in a number
of populated areas.
According to S. Ohanian, 26 border populated areas of Armenia are in
the the immediate danger of bombardment. 21 out of them are in the
Tavush region, 5 in the Yeghegnadzor region. He attached importance
to the necessity to pay a special attention to border populated areas.
